About
Song and His Friends is a new Sydney-based concert series presenting intimate live performances by emerging musicians in small studio settings.The series brings together emerging performers and composers working across classical and contemporary traditions, including artists with diverse cultural and musical backgrounds. It approaches listening as a shared cultural practice—one that shapes how time is experienced through attention, presence, and encounter within local communities.
The inaugural programme is presented in two performances with the same repertoire:
17 July at Church Street Studio (Camperdown, 30–60 seats), and
24 July at Hayes Street Studio (Neutral Bay, 25–30 seats).
The concert features Helen Kim (flute) and Annie Yueming Wang (piano). Their collaboration reflects the core focus of the series: young musicians actively shaping how art music is performed and heard today. Working across both established repertoire and contemporary practice, they bring technical clarity and interpretative openness to a programme spanning C.P.E. Bach, Mercadante, Fauré, Debussy, and a new work by Sydney-based composer Yurun Song.
Rather than treating the two performances as separate events, the series places the same programme into two distinct parts of Sydney. In doing so, it highlights how musical experience is shaped by space, community, and listening context, even when the repertoire remains unchanged.
Each performance is designed as a focused listening environment, where performers and audience share close acoustic space, and where attention, silence, and detail form the core of the musical experience.
