GIPPSLAND JUDGES TALK
About
There’s something quietly thrilling about hearing the story behind the stories. On Thursday May 21 at 6.30pm, the Children's Book Council of Victoria, invites YOU to an evening of literary insight and spirited conversation, as a judges’ presentation is streamed live via Zoom into Schoolworks Supplies. This is a chance to step beyond the shortlist stickers and into the deliberation room itself. Liz Murray, judge for the Picture Book and New Illustrator categories, and Jo Pentony, the Eve Pownall Award Judge for information books, will unpack the judging process, reflect on the shortlisted titles across all the categories, and share a few behind-the-scenes observations on the authors and illustrators in contention. Expect candour, expertise, and perhaps a few favourites that didn’t make the final cut.
As if that weren’t enough, the evening also welcomes Karys McEwan, whose acclaimed 'The Paperbark Committee' appears on this year’s Younger Readers shortlist. McEwan will discuss the making of the novel, the rhythms and rituals of her writing life, and her own reflections on this year’s shortlisted books. Readers may also know her thoughtful literary voice through her Substack, *I Read A Lot*.
For anyone who loves children’s literature—or simply wants to hear passionate readers talk about books that matter—this promises to be a warm, insightful and very rewarding evening.
