About
Date: Saturday 16th May 2026Time: 8:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Venue: Fremantle Hospital
The Notre Dame Association of Surgical Specialties (NDASS) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) are pleased to invite you to our Orthopaedic Study Day 2026 — a practical, career-focused morning aimed at strengthening your skills in musculoskeletal assessment, orthopaedic principles, and clinical management. Sponsored by Avant Mutual.
Limb injuries are among the most common presentations seen in emergency departments and general practice. Yet for many students and junior doctors, confidently assessing joints and understanding management of musculoskeletal conditions can be a challenge.
This event provides structured, hands-on experience to build both competence and confidence across a range of diagnostic and management skills.
You’ll rotate through a variety of small-group consultant-led practical stations, focusing on a mix of high-yield med-school MSK topics and insights into the cutting-edge of clinical practice:
● Shoulder
● Hand
● Hip
● Knee
● Foot
● External Fixation
● Orthopaedic Oncology
You’ll also have the opportunity to take part in:
❖ A sawbones workshop, where you'll learn the basics of surgical fracture fixation. Guided by device experts from Medartis, you’ll get to cut, drill, screw, and repair anatomical teaching models using the same cutting-edge equipment as the pros.
❖ A plastering workshop, covering essential immobilisation techniques for limb injuries.
❖ An introduction to robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery, featuring a demonstration of Stryker’s Mako SmartRobotics system.
❖ Networking with orthopaedic registrars, here to answer any and all questions you may have about training programs, work-life balance, or anything you want to know more about.
We are fortunate to have 10 Orthopaedic Consultants and 5 Registrars joining us for the day, offering not only their expertise but practical guidance on navigating orthopaedic training pathways.
What’s included:
✔️ Consultant-led talks and teaching
✔️ Practical skills stations
✔️ Sawbones fracture plating workshop
✔️ Plastering workshop
✔️ Brunch provided
Tickets: $15
Capacity: 64 students
This event is an excellent opportunity to develop skills that are relevant across every clinical specialty, whether or not you plan to pursue a surgical pathway.
We look forward to welcoming you to a rewarding and highly practical day.
Please wear enclosed shoes (as you will be using surgical instruments) and loose-fitting athletic clothing (as you may be practicing examinations on one another) that you don’t mind getting dirty (as applying plaster can be a messy job).
