The story begins with Leonard Vole, a charming young man, being accused of murdering Emily French, a wealthy elderly woman who recently made him her principal heir. Leonard’s lawyer, initially doubts his innocence but is impressed by Leonard’s sincerity. Leonard explains that he befriended Miss French after helping her in the street and visiting her at her invitation, claiming his visits were motivated by kindness and a need for a mother figure, not greed or malice.Leonard’s alibi depends on the testimony of his wife, Romaine.
