Background on K set trains -
Operating from 1981 to 2026, the K set trains introduced Air Conditioning and extended peak hour suburban services between Gosford and the Sydney Metropolitan Area to connect into the North Shore Line and North Sydney. These trains also saw limited deployment on the South Coast Line. The second batch of K set trains featured factory installed Air Conditioning, a first for Suburban Trains. The entire fleet was later retrofitted.
The K sets were a follow on order from the 509 S set train carriages, and built by Goninan in Newcastle. 160 cars were built. 56 similar C set chopper control trains were introduced from 1985. Following the retirement of the V-set train in January 2026, these are the only stainless steel bodied trains remaining in service. They are scheduled for retirement very soon, with only 2 8 car sets remaining in regular traffic.
This tour is one not to be missed.
For this tour Sydney Bus Museum will handle ticketing, ticket checks and on board merchandise sales.
Historic Electric Traction will manage platforms and train running, and provide on board information via the public address system.
Sydney Tramway Museum (SPER) will provide historic notations and memorabilia from their collection to assist with the day.
We welcome our friends at STM and HET who are currently committed to many other exciting projects in the Transport Heritage sector, notably this year HET's ongoing efforts to prepare for a big celebration of 100 years of electric trains throughout the remainder of 2026, aswell as an event which SBM will support on street level for the opening of the first section of the Sydney Underground in Q4 2026.
