AAFT PD: Kitchen Connection
About
An online professional development session presented by the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT).Presentation:
Kitchen Connection: Cooking as a Relational Therapy
Discover how food can become a powerful therapeutic tool for engaging young people and families.
Infusing standard inpatient cooking skills programs for adolescents, with a family relational lens. This project has emerged from Family Therapy Supervision with the inpatient CAMHS team. Meeting with the families of inpatient young people, where there has been immense trauma, illness, disorders, and disadvantage, and needing to assess and provide some intervention in a brief timeframe is a daunting task. In this context, engagement with families is often challenging. Clinicians will bring to life this relational cooking enterprise, that has facilitated connection, joy and growth for many families.
This simple, but nuanced program has been well received, and demonstrates some practical ways to engage in family work, that can succeed when talking alone has failed, and that can live on in their everyday lives.
