ABOUT Dr Rimlinger:
Dr Natalie Rimlinger is a Clinical Psychologist and founder of Footsteps Psychology in Canberra. A self-described gifted, rebellious underachiever who left school at Year 10, Natalie discovered her own giftedness as an adult — after years of feeling bored, misunderstood, and thoroughly under-served by a system that had no idea what to do with her. She knows that chair from both sides.
It was her children who brought her to the field. Both are gifted; her youngest is profoundly gifted — and it was navigating that reality as a parent, with all its passion and frustration, that shaped her entire career.
Natalie holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Australian National University, where her doctoral research examined the psychological wellbeing of parents of gifted children. She has presented on giftedness internationally and has worked with gifted individuals and their families for over two decades, using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).
Her central clinical conviction — and one she'll speak to tonight — is that the gifted population is its own distinct group, and that most of the psychological assessment tools and measures we currently use were simply never normed with them in mind. Until that changes, gifted children and their families will keep falling through the cracks. She is determined to make sure that happens less. While no longer working with children, Natalie still supports the parents of gifted children and is a fierce advocate, with beliefs that every child deserves a proper educational fit.
