About
Kevin John Sheedy AO is a towering figure in Australian rules football, boasting an unparalleled 47-year VFL/AFL career as a player and coach that spanned 929 games. As a tough and clever defender/ruck-rover, he played 251 games for Richmond, winning three premierships (1969, 1973, 1974) and the 1976 best and fairest. Transitioning into coaching, he led Essendon for 27 seasons (1981–2007), transforming them into a powerhouse with four premierships (1984, 1985, 1993, 2000) while pioneering innovations like the Anzac Day match and driving the growth of Indigenous talent through the Dreamtime at the 'G game. Following his time at Essendon, he served as the inaugural coach of Greater Western Sydney (2012–2013) before returning to the Bombers in various commercial roles. Inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and elevated to Legend status in 2018, Sheedy is celebrated not only for his 7 premierships as player and coach but also for his immense off-field influence, marketing acumen, and dedication to the development of the sport.Date
