GEORGE BIZOS : ICON - A special tribute documentary
About
The Castellorizian Association of WA presentsThe touching story of a teenage refugee from Greece, George Bizos, who became a relentless human-rights lawyer in the crucible of a violent, racist regime in South Africa, will be screened at the Castellorizian House, 160 Anzac Road Mount Hawthorn on Sunday, June 7th at 2 pm for a 2:30 pm start.
Afternoon tea included.
Speaking truth to power, George Bizos fought the injustices of apartheid in South Africa. Friend and lawyer to Nelson Mandela, he was motivated by a belief that "there comes a time in the life of every person when you either succumb or you fight. If needs be." A message for the ages.
Over decades, George Bizos represented many anti-apartheid activists at their trials including Nelson Mandela and others in the Rivonia trial, and members of the UDF in the Delmas trial. He also fought for justice for families of those who died in police custody, such as Steve Biko, and represented Chris Hani's family at the TRC after his assassination. His lifelong dedication helped uncover the truth behind apartheid crimes and contributed to South Africa's democratization through the adoption of an inclusive Constitution.
The documentary uses public and never-before-seen archive of George Bizos in action, his family’s 8mm and still archive as well as interviews with notables, colleagues, and family members. An engaging film to the end.
There will be an Introduction and Q & A with George Georgiou, lawyer and co-producer.
