🎼 About Tony Hicks
Melbourne-based woodwind specialist Tony Hicks has performed across Australia and internationally since the late 1970s.
His extensive career includes performances with global icons such as Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder, as well as leading jazz artists like Billy Cobham and Randy Brecker.
He studied with saxophone virtuoso Peter Clinch and performed with the Peter Clinch Saxophone Quartet for over a decade. In 1984, he was a national finalist in the ABC Concerto and Vocal Competition (now the Young Performer’s Award), performing Henri Tomasi’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra.
As a multi-instrumentalist (flutes, clarinets, and saxophones), he has performed in over 100 professional musical productions, including The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Porgy and Bess, and Jesus Christ Superstar.
He has also performed on major Australian television productions such as Dancing with the Stars Australia, Australia's Got Talent, and The Masked Singer Australia, and recorded with renowned Australian artists including John Farnham, Marina Prior, Anthony Warlow, Tommy Emmanuel, Gurrumul, Paul Grabowsky, and David Hirschfelder.
From 2000 to 2014, he performed with the Australian Art Orchestra, contributing to innovative cross-cultural projects including Crossing Roper Bar. He has also collaborated internationally on South Indian Carnatic music projects, including performances in Chennai broadcast on Jaya TV.
Tony is a dedicated educator, teaching woodwind instruments across Melbourne since the 1980s. He currently works at Macleod College and Melbourne Girls College, and tutors at Melbourne Polytechnic. He also collaborates with Gillian Howell on creative music programs for young people.
He continues to perform with groups including YID! and the Melbourne Ska Orchestra.
