Spiritual Trauma: Workshop on Recovery and Growth
About
Broken, but… Recovery and growth after spiritual trauma
This presentation outlines an approach to working with those who have suffered spiritual trauma. Recovery and growth are a two-step process. First, to regain emotional functioning after a trauma experience. Second, to grow psychologically and spiritually in ways never previously thought possible. The post-traumatic growth model is applied. Dr Stevens brings evidence-based clinical psychology techniques to intersect with spiritual insight and biblical principles. God enables the healing process.
Rev Dr Bruce Stevens has degrees in theology (MTh, Australian College of Theology, 1981) and pastoral psychology (PhD, Boston University, 1987). He has ordained Anglican minister (1980), with 20 years full-time ministry experience. He has retired after 25 years working as a clinical and forensic psychologist in private practice. He was a senior academic as a research professor in ageing and practical theology (Charles Sturt University 2015-2019). He is an honorary professor at AlphaCrucis University College, Sydney. He currently serves as an associate minister at Wesley Uniting Church, Canberra.
Over the years he has had 14 books published including popular psychology (Random House, 1995; Wiley-Blackwell, 2017), practice of psychology (Australian Academic Press, 2008, 2011, 2016; Wiley-Blackwell, 2015; New Harbinger, 2018), Christian counselling (Harper Collins, 1994; Novinka Publishers, 2017) and academic practical theology (Fortress Academic, 2018; Lexington Press, 2020).
