About
Walking on Country with Barry GoldingSmeaton Plain Field Trip for Central Victorian Regenerative Farmers (CVRF)
Commencing 1.30pm 26 May 2026 at Kooroocheang Werona CFA Kingston - Kooroocheang Road, Kooroocheang
(easy grade, flat and only about 1km in total, probably finished by 4:30pm)
CVRF www.cvrf.com.au is collaborating with Professor Barry Golding AM www.barrygoanna.com to offer members (free) and friends ($10 day membership for insurance) a one off-field trip on private land on the Smeaton Plain in the Kooroocheang area in southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country.
The intention of the field trip is to introduce participants to a remarkable area, recently designated as the ‘Gurutjanga / Kooroocheang Cultural Landscape’ (see p.8, https://www.hepburn.vic.gov.au/files/assets/public/v/1/places/documents/innovate-reconciliation-action-plan.pdf ). As early as 1841, this area was regarded by squatter John Hepburn in 1841 as ‘a favorite place’ for Dja Dja Wurrung people to gather. Our trip will include a visit to the privately owned Kooroocheang Falls (CVRF member Michael Argent property) and relatively intact areas of old growth red gums and remnant volcanic grasslands off Williams Road.
This Gurutjanga / Kooroocheang Cultural Landscape is one of two areas the Hepburn Shire has identified ‘which deserve to be acknowledged and managed for future generations as unique and important cultural landscapes by virtue of evidence on Country and in the historical record’.
Participants will gain insights into what the area around the base of Mount Kooroocheang was like before unsettlement by Hepburn in 1838, and why this area was such a special place for First Peoples to gather here for thousands of years. Farmers and other locals seeking to retain and regenerate original species and identify and protect First Nations sites will gain particularly valuable insights.
If you have access to a copy of Barry’s book (with Clive Willman), Six Peaks Speak: Unsettling legacies in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country, prereading of Chapter 3 about Gurutjanga (Mount Kooroocheang) is highly recommended. Soft cover copies of the book which features six local mountains, will be available for sale from Barry on the day for $69.
