Alexander Kastalsky (1856–1926) was one of the most influential composers and scholars of Russian Orthodox sacred music in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As director of the Moscow Synodal Choir and a leading figure of the Moscow Synodal School, he helped revive ancient chant traditions and shaped a distinctly Russian liturgical style that blended spiritual depth with rich choral writing. Kastalsky’s music drew deeply from traditional Orthodox chant while also expanding the expressive possibilities of church composition, inspiring generations of composers and church musicians. On the centenary of his death, we commemorate his enduring contribution to Orthodox worship and sacred choral art, which continues to resonate in churches and concert halls around the world.
