From Learning to Leading: Rethinking Education Pathways
About
TITLE: From Learning to Leading: Rethinking Education Pathways for Refugee Youth Students Through Trauma-Informed Practice and Leadership Training
PRESENTER: Camilla Portela (Navitas Skilled Futures)
ABSTRACT: Refugee youth often navigate profound challenges when building a new life in Australia, including poverty, unemployment, disrupted education, and historical trauma. While AI and digital tools can assist in learning, they cannot substitute the holistic development provided by dedicated educators.
Designed for trainers and LLN practitioners, this presentation highlights the success of the Teacher Aide Pathway Pilot Program and the 7-week Young Leaders Program at Navitas Fairfield. These initiatives support professional growth and create a culturally responsive educational environment by allowing refugee youth to become trusted mentors.
By showcasing real student voices and practical digital tools, this session will demonstrate how trauma-informed, targeted leadership training fosters inclusion, strengthen community trust, and build pathways to employment for youth students.
