Ami Williamson, Petersham Bowlo, Sun 27 September
About
Singer-songwriter Ami Williamson plays her first show at the iconic Petersham Bowling Club on Sunday 27 September.“Forceful, funny, powerful and poetic, Ami Williamson is a Singer/Songwriter like no other!” (Sydney Morning Herald)
Ami Williamson is a songwriter who marries raw storytelling with indie folk and soulful jazz influences. In concert Ami sings about family and the people she loves, takes a dig at Al Pacino’s lifestyle choices, reinterprets the Angels’ iconic ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’, and pays tribute to country music legend Joy McKean. Ami mixes in some classic folk covers, a haunting piano original The Soldier’s Wife, and some hilarious feminista songs like the ‘Mother-in-law Song’.
Ami is one of those rare female singers. While her roots are firmly in the tradition of singer/songwriter, her richly diverse upbringing had Ami taking the stage not only in opera and classical, but also touring with her father, legendary country music artist John Williamson.
After high school Ami studied classical singing and piano at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and then went on to win a scholarship to further her studies at a renowned music institute in Germany.
Upon her return home Ami was accepted into Opera Australia, but it wasn’t long before she turned to her first love – songwriting. She had always written poetry in her youth and therefore the combination of music and words came naturally to her. Ami then wrote and released her debut album Close to Home.
Today, after many albums and concerts, Ami’s has performed her celebrated One Woman Show at major festivals and venues across Australia and abroad, including the Port Fairy Festival, Woodford Festival and The National Folk Festival. ”Ami Williamson is my favourite Australian act!” (International Folk Icon Judy Collins)
Ami’s show has been described as a ‘roller coaster of fun’, showcasing her many talents as an accomplished singer, songwriter, musician and storyteller. Her songs are wicked, poignant and sometimes downright hilarious – matched by her brilliant, versatile voice and flamboyant stage presence.
“Ami Williamson is a lot better than any singer/songwriter has a right to be” - (The Australian)
