About

To mark the launch of Amy Braes’ $1 million fundraising campaign for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, you are invited to join this special local event.

Held at the Mareeba International Club on Saturday, 6 June 2026, this FREE event brings together leading voices in ovarian cancer research and care, alongside a deeply personal story that inspired Amy's campaign.

Beginning at 11:00am, the event will feature guest presentations followed by a panel discussion designed to make ovarian cancer more visible, more understood, and more talked about.

Following the formalities, guests are invited to continue the conversation with the Lions Club of Mareeba hosting a complimentary sausage sizzle, served from 12:30pm.

This is an opportunity to learn and to build the momentum which will go well beyond Mareeba.

Guest Speakers
Professor Carlos Salomon-Gallo: a translational scientist dedicated to changing the story of ovarian cancer from late, devastating diagnoses to early detection and survivorship.

As a Professor at The University of Queensland and Director of the UQ Centre for Extracellular Vesicle Nanomedicine, he leads internationally recognised research developing blood-based biomarkers, including OCRF‑7, designed to detect ovarian cancer at its earliest stages and improve survival for women.

Dr Shabnam Gujadhur: a doctor, ovarian cancer advocate, and recipient of the 2025 World Ovarian Cancer Coalition Impact Award, recognised internationally for her contribution to awareness and advocacy.

Diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 30 while working as a junior doctor at Gold Coast University Hospital, Dr Gujadhur has since transformed her personal experience into a powerful platform for change.

Now pursuing specialist training in oncology, she is driven by a clear purpose: to improve outcomes for women through earlier detection, greater awareness, and stronger investment in research.

Her work sits at the intersection of lived experience and clinical practice. She brings a rare and deeply informed perspective to the conversation, combining medical insight with an understanding of what it means to navigate diagnosis, treatment, and care.

As an ambassador for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, her advocacy focuses on empowering women, reducing stigma, and ensuring that conversations about ovarian cancer are both more visible and more culturally informed.

Panel Discussion
Share in the stories of Amy Braes, Professor Carlos Salomon-Gallo and Dr Shabnam Gujadhur as they share their insights and experiences with the audience.

On the Day
The Mareeba International Club bar will be open, with hot and cold drinks available for purchase.

We'd love to chat after the presentations conclude, and take lots of selfies on the day to help build the momentum!

Donations to support ovarian cancer research can be made on the day via the ‘Start the chat. Build the buzz.’ campaign.

Who Should Attend
This event is open to everyone.

It will resonate with women, families, community members, and those working across health and medical fields, as well as anyone interested in supporting meaningful progress in ovarian cancer research.
