Are you thinking of entering the Australian Poetry Slam competition for the first time, and want to give yourself the best chance of going to the finals? Please join Matthew Pankhurst, a two-time State slam finalist, for a workshop that explores the importance of editing.When performing in a Slam, you have two minutes to connect emotionally with an appreciative audience of potential judges, so make every second count. Give your poem purpose. Make your metaphors shine. Dangle the hook, and stand out with a thought-provoking conclusion.
Bring one or two of your original works to share. Explore techniques designed to help you complete your poem in the designated two minutes, and let Matthew guide you through a series of editing exercises that will elevate your work until it shines. The workshop is open to beginners and seasoned performers interested in honing their inner artist.
Matthew Pankhurst is an active member of the spoken word scene, you might see him around at open mics or ringing the bell at the Australian Poetry Slam competition. His poetry is mindful and has a flagrant disregard for the rules, but he still won't call a poem finished until it's been edited at least once.
