About
2-day course for Intermediate and Advanced users of SPACE GASSEach course will involve 2 full days "hands on" tuition and will include Lunch, Morning, and Afternoon tea. Participants will be given a statement of completion for their CPD records and a copy of the course notes and worked examples.
This training is suitable for experienced SPACE GASS users who are already comfortable with the basic modelling and design workflows, and who want to push further into nonlinear analysis, dynamic analysis, and advanced modelling techniques.
Places will be limited to 20 people to ensure each person receives a high level of personal instruction.
The course is run by Dr. Tien Nguyen, SPACE GASS Chief Engineer, and Mr. Brendan Rossbotham, SPACE GASS Software Developer.
General Topics Covered:
• Design of steel members by advanced structural analysis (AS 4100 new clause) — LBA, MNA and GMNIA shell-element analysis used directly to determine member capacity
• Column buckling, bracing strategies and leaning-column behaviour
• Portal frame design — haunches, 3D extension, lateral stability
• Lateral-torsional buckling of rafters using shell elements and fly-bracing
• Factory crane moving loads
• Querying, filtering and enveloping analysis results
• Water tank in soil — elastic supports, hydrostatic and active soil pressure
• Silo structures — granular pressure loads, lumped masses, and AS 1170.4 spectral seismic analysis
• Cable structures — catenary theory, ski lift pulleys, guyed masts with wind load calculator
• RC commercial building — equivalent static earthquake analysis, centre of mass vs. centre of stiffness
• Submodelling — global-to-local FEA refinement with boundary enforcement
• Reinforced concrete slab design (Wood–Armer) and strip footing design (AS 3600)
• Full dynamic analysis suite — natural frequency, transient, harmonic, and response-spectrum analysis
• Steel deflection optimisation — automated section sizing to meet serviceability limits
