In 1996, Melton, Victoria, the nightmare begins for the Cecil family - the day their 16-year-old daughter would be found dead, slumped in a seated position in the carport of an abandoned house. Yet 28 years on, despite a coronial inquest unable to rule out foul play, Alana’s case remains closed, and vital questions remain unanswered.
No drug paraphernalia was found at the scene. Alana’s clothes had been hurriedly put on; her bra was missing, and her underwear was inside out and back to front. Crucially, two separate, fresh injection sites raised immediate red flags. It was clear Alana’s body had been staged…but by who?
Eight years after her death, a DNA breakthrough identified two male semen profiles on and inside Alana’s body. One belonged to a 57-year-old man known to police. Under questioning, his only response was: 'No comment.'

Having graduated from university with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Ryan shifted his focus from the courtroom to the microphone, re-examining some of Australasia’s most complex and long-standing unsolved crime cases. Ryan’s approach to true crime has flipped the traditional genre on its head, moving away from passive storytelling into active, real-time investigation - centred on victims and their families. Ryan's work has led to significant re-examination of some of Australasia’s most notorious historic crimes, still unanswered today, including the disappearance of Swedish backpackers Urban Höglin and Heidi Paakkonen from the small New Zealand town of Thames, and the death of Melton’s very own Alana Cecil.
