Townsville Folk Club presents The Humbuckin' Pickups
About
The Humbuckin’ Pickups are a standout Australian roots act blending folk, country, andstorytelling-driven song writing with warmth, humour, and undeniable stage chemistry. At the heart
of the band are Ewan Cloonan (songwriter, vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica) and Mahney Cain
(vocals, double bass, bones), whose seamless harmonies and driving rhythms have made them
favourites at festivals including Woodford, Tamworth, and Gympie Muster. While most often
performing as a dynamic duo, they also expand to a trio or full band for select shows, delivering a
bigger, fuller sound.
Formed in 2013, the band has built a strong reputation for original music grounded in real-life
stories of regional Australia. Their latest single, “How the Other Half Live,” highlights their powerful
narrative style and growing national profile. With a fourth studio album on the way and
international touring ahead, The Humbuckin’ Pickups continue to win over audiences wherever
they go. Armed with the strings of Folk Music & tight harmonies with impeccable song writing and storytelling - Expect energy. Expect heart. Expect songs that stick with you long after the night’s over.
They will be joined by Country Duo Kel Nolan & Jane Barnes
Kel has been playing guitar since childhood and spent years as a session player at the legendary Enrec and Hadley Studios in Tamworth. His talent has seen him tour with some of Australia’s biggest country names — Brian Young, Slim Dusty, John Williamson, Kate Ballantyne, Jane Saunders, Chad Morgan — and international stars like Jett Williams and Charlie Landsborough. He’s also a proud member of the iconic Sons of the Soil band.
Jane grew up in Tasmania in a wonderfully musical family, surrounded by everything from musical theatre and opera to rock and country. Since moving to North Queensland in 1991, she’s been deeply involved in the country music festival scene — mentoring young artists and judging competitions since the age of 21.
Kel and Jane joined forces around two years ago and have played festivals from Tamworth and Charters Towers to Capella and are currently writing original material to record later this year.
