IAH Victoria - Morris Wines Fieldtrip
About
IAH is pleased to invite members, colleagues and friends to a field trip hosted in collaboration with Morris Wines, EHS Support and Goulburn-Murray Water at the historic Morris Wines estate near Rutherglen in northeast Victoria.Morris Wines is one of Australia’s most iconic fortified wine producers, with a vineyard history dating back to 1859. In recent years, Morris Wines has also expanded into premium single malt whisky production, adding another layer to its long association with regional produce, water, land and geology.
At the heart of both wine and whisky production is one essential ingredient: a secure and sustainable water source. This field trip will focus on the groundwater systems that support Morris Wines’ operations and the technical, regulatory and practical considerations involved in developing and managing groundwater resources in northeast Victoria.
EHS Support has undertaken several hydrogeological and groundwater studies for Morris Wines, and Dr Ben Petrides of EHS Support will provide a technical overview of the regional hydrogeology, including the geological setting, groundwater resource characteristics and why this part of Victoria is so well suited to producing exceptional wine and whisky.
The field trip will also include discussion of the regulatory framework for groundwater licensing. Representatives from Goulburn-Murray Water will provide insights into the Groundwater Pumping Impact Assessment Guidelines, including the review process, risk assessment considerations and how groundwater licence applications are assessed and determined.
As part of the visit, we will tour the pumping borefield and discuss practical requirements for groundwater infrastructure, borefield management and metering.
Following the technical component, we will return to the Morris Wines cellar door to enjoy a hearty meal by the open fire, accompanied by a selection of Morris Wines wines and whisky. Further information about Morris Wines is available at: www.morrisofrutherglen.com.
