Boobooks Meeting 1081
About
Speaker: Chris McCarty.Title of Talk: 'Mongolia - Facts and Photo's'
I spent a fortnight in Mongolia in 2025 on a trip based around photography. This provided time in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, as well as 8 nights on the Steppe staying in Gers. We had access to local herding families living on the Mongolian Steppe to chat with and to take photographs of. Along the way we learned a lot about the history and culture of Mongolia and how in the past 25 years life has changed significantly for the inhabitants. I'll tell the story, based on my photo's, weaving in as much as I can of the history and culture.
Bio
I am a retired accountant who began in industry and then worked for 25 years in various roles at Monash University, The Institute of Education of the University of London and at RMIT. I had a number of roles including the preparation of the the Annual Financial Report for Monash University, supporting all types of medical research and installing finance systems both in Monash (remember the Y2K bug) and in London where I lived for 2 years. I have been retired for 10 years and now spend my time running my local Probus Club, playing Golf, learning lawn bowls and doing some support work for a charity. I have had an interest in photography over many years, and I was offered the opportunity of the trip to Mongolia with RMIT Photography staff and ex-students. I needed only 30 seconds to commit. Where else can you get a tutorial on lightbox (software for enhancing images) whilst travelling along bumpy roads on the Mongolian Steppe. One morning I clocked up 14,500 steps, according to my Fitbit, all whilst sitting in the back of a Lexus 4wd. It was a bit of a rough ride.
