In leading continuous improvement, what must I be good at?
About
Overview: At the 2025 AME conference, Jon Colby quoted Steven Covey, "Leadership is a choice, not a position." The context of this quote was that no matter your title, you’re not leading if people aren’t following. A title doesn’t motivate and inspire others, actions can though. Instead of waiting for permission or direction, taking initiative and responsibility for your actions that positively impact those around you is a choice you have. Thus, to have people follow CI initiatives (or any management led initiative), what must you choose to regularly do? Further, to be able to confidently make such choices, what skills do you need to be practicing such that they come to the surface naturally when they need to? How do you practice them?Key Learning Objectives:
- Four foundational "action" points which you can start practicing the day you get back to work from this conference.
- A way of scientifically thinking and acting when people seem like they may not be "following" or clearly aren’t.
- Ingredients essential to success when leading someone in developing a new skill.
- An alternative view of the purpose of leader standard work, one that you can take back to operations leaders for consideration and practice.
