Catching Waves in Watercolour Workshop with Roslyn Hartwig
About
IntroductionWaves crashing on the shore, rolling surf and the movement of water bring energy and excitement to coastal landscapes.
In this workshop we will explore how to capture the movement and power of the ocean using watercolour. Through demonstrations, exercises and small paintings, we will focus on expressive brushwork, tonal contrast and the dynamic patterns created by waves and surf.
What You Will Learn
In this workshop we will explore:
• Techniques for painting waves and moving water
• Creating energy and movement with brushwork
• Using tone and contrast to describe surf and foam
• Colour choices for vibrant ocean scenes
• Simplifying the patterns and rhythms of waves
This course is ideal for:
• Beginners ready to explore painting waves
• Students wanting to improve their water painting techniques
• Anyone who loves the energy of the ocean
• Continuing students wishing to develop expressive brushwork
Some basic watercolour experience is helpful, but beginners are welcome.
MATERIALS LIST
From experience, I know that it is easier and more enjoyable if you have the full range of materials for the
workshop. I have kept this list to a minimum as much as possible.
If you are buying new paints, artist-quality (non-staining) watercolours are preferred. I use MaimeriBlu
and Daniel Smith, though Cotman and Van Gogh are excellent budget-friendly options.
