Artsnational Bowral - John Swainston - The Tornado of change
About
The Arts 1900-1920: Tornado of ChangeAs 1900 dawned, England was celebrating Edward Elgar's noble Enigma Variations and Joseph Conrad released Lord Jim. 1902 saw the opening of New York's colossal 'Flatiron' Building. Colour photographs appear in France in 1908, just prior to Picasso's Girl with a Mandolin in 1910. By 1920 Alban Berg was finishing his Wozzeck. The Bauhaus School had opened in Weimar, Jazz was booming in New Orleans, and W.B. Yeats had released The Second Coming. A veritable tornado of change.
Writer and Photographer John Swainston explores multiple arts, with illustration, musical and reading excerpts, revealing the detailed transformation and social context of two extraordinary decades.
