Book Launch: Equality, Reconciliation and Social Cohesion

hero
John XXIII College warmly invites you to the Perth launch of Equality, Reconciliation and Social Cohesion: The Inspiration of Sir William Deane, edited by Fr Frank Brennan SJ.

DATE AND TIME

Tuesday 21 July 2026 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM (UTC+08)

Location

Thomas More Exhibition Centre
John XXIII College, John XXIII Avenue, Mount Claremont WA 6010

In the wake of the Bondi Massacre and the Albanese Government's Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, our nation finds itself in a moment of deep reflection about who we are and what we stand for. This timely new book offers a compelling resource for that conversation.

Sir William Deane served as an outstanding High Court judge before commencing a five-year term as Governor-General thirty years ago. Guided by a lifelong commitment to justice and equality under the law, he led the nation with compassion and integrity. Alongside Lady Helen Deane, he became a defining voice for reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and the wider Australian community. He led the nation at ANZAC Day commemorations, his own father having been awarded the Military Cross, and championed inclusive multiculturalism as the essential building block of social cohesion. He represented Australia to itself at times of mourning and loss, and at moments of national pride, such as the Sydney Olympics and the Centenary of Federation.

This book brings together a thematic presentation of Sir William's key speeches as Governor-General, providing an invaluable resource for all those grappling with the questions now before the Royal Commission, and for anyone who believes in the enduring importance of a fair go for all Australians.
