The festival of chariots which originated in India over 2000 years ago, is a grand procession with much fanfare – colours, music and an atmosphere of peace and positivity. It symbolizes a procession of peace and cohesion – bringing people of all backgrounds together topulla royal chariot through the streets.The Lord of The Universe, sits atop the chariot, and comes out to greet the people. The festival comes to the people, not the people to the festival. Regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion or age – everyone is warmly welcomed to partake in the pulling of the chariot through the streets, in an act of unity.
ISKCON started the Festival of Chariots in USA in 1967 and is now celebrated in across the World in over 100 cities. At each venue, organisers come from ISKCON and local community work together to put up these large, free festivals, for the benefit of the wider community.
In its fourth year in Toowoomba, the festival is being held in Queens Park for the first time. This year's event will also include a spectacular fireworks show at the end of the Festival. In addition to the Chariot parade, the Festival features cultural performances from different communities in Toowoomba, food stalls showcasing a variety of cuisines, activities for children and information tents highlighting the significance of the festival.
