AUTG AUDITIONS - Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?

We are seeking 8 performers for this production of Eric Bentley’s powerful documentary drama examining the Hollywood blacklist and the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings of the 1940s and 1950s.

Constructed from real testimony, transcripts, and public record, Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? places audiences inside one of the most turbulent periods in American cultural history.
 

About the Play

This is documentary theatre.
The script is drawn from the actual words of figures including Arthur Miller, Lillian Hellman, Elia Kazan, Jerome Robbins, Paul Robeson and others who appeared before HUAC.
Actors will not be expected to impersonate famous people.
The work asks actors to embody the humanity of those involved rather than recreate celebrity personas. Performers will focus on the truthful delivery of testimony, argument and conviction.

About the Audition

Actors will be auditioned in 10-minute slots and be asked to read an excerpt from the play. This will be a cold read.
Auditions are open to actors of all ages (18 and over), any ethnicity and any gender.

AUDITIONS ARE BOOKED BY ONLINE APPOINTMENT ONLY

Auditions are booked in 10-minute slots and auditionees will be seen individually during that time. You will be given excerpts to read cold on the day.

Auditions are open to everyone aged 18 and over. You do not need to be associated with Adelaide University.
You do not need to be a member of the Theatre Guild to audition, but if successful, you will need to become a member (minimum cost: $15).
