HEMA Event Participation Waiver and Assumption of Risk

I understand and acknowledge that purchasing a ticket for the event serves as acknowledgement of and agreement to the conditions of this waiver.

I acknowledge that participation in Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), including sparring, drilling, competition, coaching, weapons handling, and associated activities, is a dangerous recreational activity under the Civil Liability Act 2003 (Qld) and involves potential risks, including injury, permanent disability, or death.

I understand that risks include, but are not limited to:

• Strikes from steel simulators;
• Falls, trips, collisions, and accidental contact;
• Equipment failure or misuse;
• Physical exertion, dehydration, and heat-related illness;
• Concussion and other head injuries.

I confirm that:

1. I participate voluntarily and at my own risk.
2. I am medically and physically fit to participate.
3. I will comply with all event rules, referee directions, and safety requirements, including mandatory protective equipment standards.
4. I will immediately stop participating if directed by staff, referees, marshals, or medical personnel.
5. I accept responsibility for any personal equipment I use.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, I release and indemnify the organisers, venue, instructors, officials, volunteers, sponsors, and affiliated clubs from liability for injury, loss, damage, or death arising from my participation, except where liability cannot legally be excluded under Australian law.

I consent to receiving first aid or emergency medical treatment if required.

I understand that photographs or video may be taken during the event and may be used for promotional or archival purposes unless I advise the organisers otherwise in writing.
