This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of Australia’s leading photography specialists and learn about the twentieth century’s most influential photographers through an expert lens.
This event is held in association with the exhibitions Max Dupain and Ansel Adams: In search of perfection, on display at Bayside Gallery 20 June to 30 August 2026.
Gael Newton Bio
Melbourne based photographic arts consultant and valuer Gael Newton AM, is the former Senior Curator Photography at National Gallery of Australia. She first met Max Dupain in 1975 and remained in affectionate contact until his last years. In 1980 she mounted the Max Dupain retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales with associated monograph published by David Ell Press.
During her time as photography curator at the National Gallery of Australia, Newton studied Ansel Adams's 75 work The Museum Set portfolio which the Gallery had acquired and then exhibited in 1983. In 1999 she curated the NGA touring exhibition Natural causes: Landscape photographs by Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter.
