Session Background and Outline
Effective legal research is a fundamental skill for every lawyer, underpinning sound advice, persuasive advocacy and informed decision-making. With legal information now more accessible, and more overwhelming, than ever, lawyers must be able to efficiently locate, evaluate and apply authoritative sources.
This practical session will explore contemporary legal research techniques, including effective use of legislation, case law, secondary sources and online legal databases. Participants will gain strategies for improving research efficiency, validating sources, and navigating the ever-evolving legal information landscape. Whether you are refining established skills or seeking to enhance your research capabilities, this session will provide valuable insights to support confident and effective legal practice.

With a career spanning more than four decades, Deborah Bowring, Manager, Tasmanian Law Library, has been a passionate advocate for law librarianship and legal information services throughout Tasmania. Her journey began as a junior secretary with the Law Society of Tasmania, where responsibility for maintaining the law library sparked an enduring interest in legal research and library management. Encouraged by mentors and supported by further study, she developed extensive expertise in law librarianship, holding positions with the Law Foundation, private law firms, government legal libraries, and the University of Tasmania. In 2003, she joined the University of Tasmania as a Reference Librarian before being appointed Manager of the Law Library within 18 months. Today, Deborah manages the Tasmanian Law Library, overseeing a statewide network of legal information services supporting the judiciary, legal profession, Department of Justice and wider community. A member of the Australian Law Librarians' Association for more than 30 years, she is highly regarded for her commitment to professional development, collaboration and advancing access to legal information.
