IMPRESSIONISM & PAUL DURAND-RUEL
The Geelong Gallery is presenting a major exhibition, “Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel,” from 20 June to 11 October 2026. The exhibition explores the remarkable story of Paul Durand-Ruel, the visionary art dealer whose unwavering support helped transform the course of modern art. Among the first to champion artists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Durand-Ruel played a pivotal role in promoting a generation of painters whose work challenged the conventions of the nineteenth-century art establishment. Through innovative marketing strategies, financial support, and international exhibitions, he helped create a market for modern art and is widely regarded as the most influential art dealer of the nineteenth century. This lecture will examine the life and achievements of Paul Durand-Ruel and trace the emergence of Impressionism in nineteenth-century Paris. It will explore how a group of avant-garde artists rebelled against the rigid traditions of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, choosing instead to paint outdoors (en plein air) and to capture the fleeting effects of light, atmosphere, and modern life through rapid brushwork and vibrant colour. The Impressionists revolutionized artistic practice by focusing on everyday subjects, unusual viewpoints, and the dynamic qualities of movement and changing light. Their innovative approach transformed the visual arts and laid the foundations for later movements, including Post-Impressionism.Featuring approximately seventy works, the Geelong exhibition provides a rare opportunity to experience many of the masterpieces associated with this groundbreaking movement. This rRECORDED lecture will place the exhibition in its broader historical and cultural context, highlighting both Durand-Ruel’s extraordinary contribution and the enduring legacy of the Impressionists.
