The Rebbe, An Open Exploration
About
I’ve had a number of sincere conversations with anash people of many age/stage groups who are trying to understand some of the practices and ideas they have grown up with. The questions come from internal dilemmas and are fueled by a niggling guilt and sense of non-connection to some of the ‘key aspects’ of being a chossid.
These questions include:
* Why go to the ohel- aren’t there halachos against asking the dead for stuff?
* What is the difference between peoples attitudes towards the Rebbe and attitudes found in other religions?
* Why do people focus on relationships with the Rebbe more-so that with Hashem?
* What is the role of a Rebbe in Judaism?
Many people carry these questions and never receive a structured, non-judgmental opportunity to explore them seriously. Often they are lectured that if the Rebbe’s did it, it must be right. Or they are provided answers from chassidus- when they are looking for non-chassidus explanations.
Chassidishkeit and personal spirituality is every individuals choice and journey. To honour that, I've put together a two-part series that will examine these topics through Tanach, Chazal and Kabbalah and provide space for honest questions and discussion. The classes will be anchored to text but not require assumed knowledge or heavy concentration.
My hope is to help participants develop a clearer and more informed understanding of ideas that are central to life in a Lubavitch community.
This is a personal initiative not under any umbrella or org.
