Newcastle Picnic Train

Date: Saturday, 18th July, 2026 - One day only
Step aboard the Picnic Train for an unforgettable heritage rail adventure from Sydney to Newcastle and return, travelling in beautifully restored vintage carriages hauled by powerful heritage diesel locomotives.
From the moment you leave Sydney, you'll be transported back to the golden age of rail travel as the train winds its way through some of New South Wales' most spectacular railway scenery. Relax in comfortable heritage accommodation and enjoy ever-changing views as the train follows the picturesque Central Coast, passing alongside the sparkling waters of Brisbane Water and traversing the region's coastal landscapes.
One of the journey's highlights is the crossing of the magnificent Hawkesbury River Railway Bridge. Towering above the broad waters of the Hawkesbury, this iconic structure offers breathtaking views that can only truly be appreciated from the train.
For those looking to make their journey even more memorable, guests can upgrade to our popular High Tea experience. Enjoy a selection of sweet and savoury treats cooked and served onboard as the stunning scenery rolls past your window, combining the elegance of heritage rail travel with the pleasure of dining aboard a moving train.
Upon arrival in Newcastle, enjoy more than three hours at your leisure to explore one of Australia's most vibrant coastal cities. Wander the historic streets, relax at one of the city's renowned cafés, enjoy lunch overlooking the harbour, browse local shops, or take a stroll along Newcastle's stunning beaches and ocean baths.
As the afternoon draws to a close, rejoin the Picnic Train for the return journey to Sydney. A highlight of the trip home is the ascent of the famous Cowan Bank, where our heritage diesel locomotives power the train up one of New South Wales' most historic and challenging railway grades before descending back into Sydney.
Whether you're a railway enthusiast, history lover, photographer, foodie, or simply looking for a memorable day out, the Picnic Train offers a unique opportunity to experience the sights, sounds, and romance of Australia's railway heritage.
Join us for a day of nostalgia, spectacular scenery, fine onboard hospitality, and classic rail travel on this special return journey between Sydney and Newcastle.
