Project Draft V2: rehearsed readings
About
Baggage is excited to present rehearsed readings of a series of original plays written by women, selected as part of our Project Draft V2 process. We believe that hearing a script interpreted and read by actors, and experiencing the audience reaction, can be incredibly helpful for the writer. That’s what this is all about! Each play will be presented once, per the below details. Please note the date/s of the play/s you wish to attend and select your tickets carefully.**Please also note that the venue, Bard’s Apothecary, is unfortunately only accessible via stairs. We apologise if this makes it difficult for you to attend.**
11 JULY: Six Cakes by Sharyn Henderson, directed by Chris Boek
A warm and insightful view into the parallel life experiences associated with organ transplants. Jane and Natalie may never have the chance to meet but their lives are inextricably linked. Mena is a baker by trade who, inspired and guided by her mentor Nonna, embraces the healing power of baking for both the baker and the consumer. She wonders whether her regulars could be more connected than they realise.
15 AUGUST: Turbulence by Megan J. Riedl, directed by Bruce Langdon
Marion Doyle’s family farm is in the red and her mother Noreen is struggling with her new identity as a widow after the mysterious death of her husband, Pat. Marion wants
to move her mother into assisted living nearby to her home in the city but Noreen is adamant she is staying put. When activist Jennifer Young inserts herself into their lives,
hoping to use Pat’s death as ammunition against more wind turbines in the area, Marion is morally opposed to her agenda – even though it may help her own.
19 SEPTEMBER: What the Bones Remember by Dana Hall, directed by Melanie Madrigali
A moving portrayal of female relationships, spiritualism and generational sadness. When a young woman arrives at a weathered Southern home seeking answers, she awakens long-buried secrets and the spirits that carry them. Blending magical realism and Appalachian ritual, the play traces three generations of women as they confront the weight of long-held secrets and the power of truth to heal.
