FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Who is this session for?
This session is designed for parents and carers of students in Years 12 who want practical guidance for how best to support their young people’s career after graduating from secondary school.
Q: What will be covered in the presentation?
In the webinar Alana will discuss:
-
What the Career Support Team is and how, as a parent, you play the most important role within it.
-
Why focusing on the first five years post-school is the key to making better career decisions.
-
Actions students can take to get ahead that most parents aren’t considering.
Alana will also share stories from students and families she has worked with.
Q: Is this aimed at specific pathways?
No, the presentation is about how to support your young person’s career journey regardless of what they’re interested in doing. We won’t be covering specific advice around university preferences etc.
Q: My young person already knows what they want to do, should I still attend?
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: In our experience, even the students who are most confident in their pathway still need support along the way (especially if there are setbacks or doubts). While this presentation is about helping your young person make great career decisions, it’s also about how to be there for them through the whole journey from decision to execution.
Q: Is this suitable if my child has no idea what they want to do yet?
Definitely. This session is especially helpful if your young person is still exploring options or feeling unsure. You’ll leave with tools to support them no matter where they’re at.
Q: When and how does the session take place?
The session is live online via Zoom. You’ll receive the link in your confirmation email after registering and an option to add the event to your calendar.
Q: Will a recording be available? I may not be able to make it live.
A recording of the presentation will be available to watch for 7 days following the event but the Q&A component won't be recorded. Audience members often share sensitive information about their young person so we like to respect their privacy. Often the best tips come out during the Q&A so we highly recommend attending live.
Q: How long is the session? What if I can’t stay for the whole time?
The session is 60 minutes, including a 15 minute Q&A at the end where you can ask Alana questions directly. If you can’t stay for the whole time that’s totally fine - join us for however long you can. While we recommend joining without distractions we understand how crazy life can be so we don’t mind if you’re on the way home from work or making dinner!
Q: Is there a cost to attend?
The session is free for parents and carers, with costs covered by VTAC.
Q: Can I ask questions during the session?
Absolutely! There will be a dedicated Q&A segment where you can ask questions live. Please note that Alana cannot provide specific advice around pathways. In this case she will refer you to the careers professional in your child’s school or VTAC.
Q: Do I need to prepare anything in advance?
No, just bring yourself (and maybe a pen and notepad!)
Q: Can I share the registration link with friends or other parents?
The more people who hear this information the better so feel free to share the registration link with other parents or friends at the school.
Q: How do I register for the event? What happens next?
Hit the “Register Now” button on this page and fill in your details. You will then receive a confirmation email containing the Zoom link to join the call. You will also have the option to add the event to your calendar. We will be sending reminder emails out before the event.
