For its next gathering, Ramona's Queer Book Club is reading Cannon, the graphic novel by Lee Lai that won this year's Stella Prize...and the first graphic novel ever to receive the award!A funny, dark and emotionally turbulent work from one of Australia's most acclaimed cartoonists, Cannon is a powerful exploration of queer friendship, family obligation and what happens when the pressure of being 'the responsible one' becomes too much.
Set during a Montreal heatwave, the story begins with a curious scene: a restaurant reduced to rubble and its usually stoic protagonist, Cannon, surrounded by the wreckage. As the novel unfolds, we trace the events that led her there, from caring for her ageing grandfather to navigating work, identity and a friendship that has shaped her life since high school. Once inseparable, Cannon and her best friend Trish are now grappling with the changing nature of intimacy, loyalty and belonging as they move through their late twenties.
Rendered in Lee Lai's distinctive, expressive artwork, Cannon is both sharply funny and deeply moving. It's a story about anger, responsibility, queer community and the complicated bonds that sustain us.
