It is now almost 15 years since The Book of Mormon first took Broadway by storm — and rather longer since Joseph Smith discovered the golden plates that provided, somewhat indirectly, the inspiration for the show.Written by Robert Lopez, together with Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame — or infamy, depending on your household standards — The Book of Mormon has become one of the most successful and talked-about musicals of recent times.
It is deliberately provocative, cheerfully irreverent and decidedly not a quiet evening of gentle hymn-singing. It is also very clever, musically polished and, by all accounts, extremely funny.
The remarkable thing about The Book of Mormon is that a show which set out to offend almost everyone somehow managed to win over audiences around the world. It is sharp, outrageous, uncomfortable in places, and performed with the sort of energy that makes people leave the theatre either laughing, recovering, or quietly reassessing their threshold for musical theatre.
For those prepared to leave their delicate sensibilities safely at home, it promises to be a terrific night out.
