About

$20/$15. Booking recommended. Seats are limited.
This July, Progetto Corelli returns to the beautiful heritage mansion in Fitzroy North where we had [Divertimenti] and [Banchetto Musicale] concerts. Fresh from the 2026 National Celtic Folk Festival, we are delighted to bring our festival program home to Melbourne, expanded with additional Baroque pieces of the time.
This concert will showcase a selection of favourite old Scots airs and sonatas published in the mid eighteenth century, the period now referred to as the Scottish Enlightenment. At that time, it was popular for Italian musicians to seek further opportunities for themselves in Scotland. Composers like Barsanti and Geminiani applied their Italian aesthetic to Scottish music, for example adding formalised basso continuo and ornamentation. Scottish composers like McGibbon, Oswald and Reid were influenced by the Italian approach, and wove similar musical devices into their own settings and compositions that they published and sold in London and Edinburgh. This cosmopolitan cross-over became known as the ‘Scots drawing-room style’.
Program:
Francesco Barsanti (1690 ~ 1775)
General John Reid (1721 ~ 1807)
Burk Thumoth (c.1710 ~ c.1755)
William McGibbon (1690 ~ 1756)
Francesco Geminiani (1687 ~ 1762)
James Oswald (1710 ~ 1769)
A more detailed program will be announced soon.
