Caught between his domineering father, John, and his sharp-tongued grandmother Ella, Cal finds himself confronting the complicated ties of family, faith and desire.
Written with Stuart’s trademark emotional precision and compassion, the novel is both windswept and intimate. It's a story about loneliness, repression and the painful difficulty of becoming yourself in a place that demands conformity. This novel is deeply interested in fathers and sons, inherited shame, and the lives people build around the truths they cannot say aloud.
