About

Explore your backyard at the Town Common Walk and Talk.

In small groups, you'll walk between designated stations to explore the wetlands, mangroves and bird habitats of the Townsville Town Common. Along the way, you'll hear from local experts who are caring for these ecosystems, learn about their importance to our region, and see how you can get involved in citizen science.

Whether you’re a nature lover, curious local or looking for a unique outdoor experience, this event offers a chance to better understand and connect with one of Townsville’s most important natural areas.

Bookings are essential.

STATION INFORMATION

- Station 1: Explore the fascinating world of native plants and invasive weeds with Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Inc. Learn how to spot the difference, discover the important role native species play in supporting local wildlife, and find out how weeds can impact our local ecosystems.

- Station 2: Meet wetland expert Scott Fry from NQ Dry Tropics, who’ll discuss why wetlands are important and the current health of the Town Common. He'll showcase the Gurambilbarra Town Common Wetlands project, which is tackling para grass to open water bodies and better support the abundant wildlife that relies on this iconic nature reserve.

- Station 3: Step into the saltmarshes and mangroves with Earthwatch Australia’s Lucía Caldas Durán. Discover the flora and fauna that can be found in these critical coastal wetland habitats, and see how you can collect data as a citizen scientist to grow our understanding of their health.

- Station 4: Peer into BirdLife Townsville’s binoculars to spot some of the magnificent birds that call the Town Common home, even if it’s only for a brief visit as they migrate. Learn why the Town Common is a hot spot for birdos.
