Excel Essentials: Real-World Data Skills
Session overview
Excel is everywhere in health and research but it can be difficult to know where to start and easy to make mistakes.
This hands‑on session will help you build confidence with real-world data: structuring spreadsheets, avoiding common mistakes, and using Excel’s built‑in tools to analyse and visualise your results.
No prior Excel or research experience required.
By the end of the session, you’ll know how to:
- Identify and avoid common Excel pitfalls that lead to errors
- Set up a clean, well‑structured dataset for analysis
- Use a small set of core formulas to summarise data
- Create and interpret a pivot table to quickly analyse data
- Build a simple, clear chart to communicate findings
You’ll also get a realistic dataset to practise spotting issues and applying these skills.

About the PresenterS
Daniel Barry is a data analyst working for Northern NSW Local Health District. Daniel is a biostatistician and a graduate of the NSW Health Biostatistics Training Program. He has worked on a range of projects within health and currently works within value-based care.
Gen O’Neill is an epidemiologist at the Australian National University. She is a critical care nurse and a graduate of Australia’s Field Epidemiology Training Program (Master of Applied Epidemiology). Her work spans critical care research, pandemic preparedness, and communicable diseases.

The RR-CLaN is a rural led initiative that aims to provide high-quality research education and training to healthcare staff working in rural, regional and remote areas.
