Learning to read is hard work. Finding books that feel exciting enough to persist with can be even harder.
At Ramona Books, this is something we're experiencing firsthand. Katie, the owner of Ramona, has boys of her own, and knows that sometimes all it takes is the right book, or the right role model, to make reading click.
So this school holidays, we're creating a cosy reading club where older boys can read with younger boys.
No lessons, no tests, no pressure. Just kids sharing books, interests and enthusiasm.
Whether it's a favourite novel, a graphic novel, Pokémon, footy stats, joke books or Guinness World Records, if it gets a child excited about reading, it's welcome.
How it works
Older boys can volunteer to read with younger children, chat about what they're reading and help show that reading can be fun and worth sticking with.
Younger boys can listen, browse books, discover new favourites and spend time with positive reading role models.
Bring a book from home, choose one from the shop, or let us help find something you'll love.
Older readers will receive a small pack of bookish goodies. Younger listeners can enjoy stickers, bookmarks, snacks and plenty of recommendations.

Who is this for?
The event is focused on encouraging boys' reading, but children of all genders are welcome.
Can siblings come?
Absolutely. If you've got a particularly enthusiastic toddler sibling, we may gently suggest a tram-watching break with a parent before rejoining us.
What happens when we arrive?
We'll welcome your child, give them a name badge, help them find a comfy spot and pair readers and listeners together. Then it's time to settle in with books, snacks and good company.
What should we bring?
Anything your child is excited to read, or nothing at all. We'll have plenty of books waiting on the shelves.
Our one rule: Be a kind reader. Be a kind listener.
Places are limited, so bookings are essential.
