About
Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, loosely based on the Gospels and centred on the final days of Jesus Christ’s life. Told largely through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, the musical explores the human relationships, political tensions, and emotional conflicts surrounding Jesus and his followers under Roman occupation in Judea.As Jesus’ influence grows, and crowds begin hailing him as a leader and saviour, Judas becomes increasingly concerned that the movement is losing its original message and drawing dangerous attention from both the Jewish priests and Roman authorities. The High Priests Caiphas and Annas fear that Jesus’ rising popularity, his accusations of blasphemy, and claims that he is the Son of God, will provoke Roman retaliation. This leads them to conspire to have Jesus arrested.
Amid the growing unrest, Mary Magdalene offers Jesus compassion and comfort while grappling with her own feelings for him. Following the Last Supper, Judas betrays Jesus to the authorities, leading to his arrest, trial before Pontius Pilate and King Herod, and ultimately his condemnation to crucifixion.
