About
Gabrielle Hunt is a Research Associate at the Institute of Child Protection Studies at Australian Catholic University, and a registered psychologist. Her PhD research focused on the prevalence and prevention of child sexual abuse and sexual harassment, with a particular focus on faith-based settings. Gabrielle’s ongoing work examines the intersections of gender and safeguarding practices within faith-based settings and the broader implications for child protection policies and practices. Her research is informed by her professional experience as a psychologist, where she worked extensively with survivors of child sexual abuse, as well as young people who have engaged in harmful sexual behaviours.VC:
• Understanding harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) between children and young people
• Prevalence and patterns of sexual harm between peers, including where and when risks are most likely to occur
• Why HSB happens including key contributing factors such as developmental stage, trauma and adversity, exposure to sexualised content, peer dynamics, power imbalances, and contextual influences
• A therapeutic and relational approach to safeguarding that prioritises safety, dignity, accountability, and support for all students involved
• Prevention strategies for schools, including protective environments, supervision, school culture, consent and respectful relationships education, and strengthening help-seeking pathways
• Supporting both impacted students and those who have engaged in HSB through trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate interventions
• Practical tools, scripts, and tips that staff can use in real situations
• Opportunities for discussion and reflection during facilitated forums to apply learning to your school context
