ISABELLA COLBRAN: A GREAT DIVA FROM MADRID
Music by Isabella Colbran, Rossini, Scarlatti, Hortense de Beauharnais, Marianna Martines a.o.
Isabella Colbran was much more than just the muse and wife of Gioachino Rossini, for which she is mostly remembered today. Born in Madrid, her fame as the supreme prima donna of her time surpassed that of Rossini as a composer for a considerable part of both their careers. At that time, singers were considered more than mere transmitters of someone else's work, but creators in their own right, who adapted arias and recitatives to their vocal capabilities and expressive tastes. In addition, Colbran was a very accomplished composer herself, and the program will feature some of her works as well as those of Rossini and other composers of the time. This concert and the Australian tour of the FANNY DAVIES Ensemble are supported by the Embassy of Spain in Australia and AECID Cultura.
