Mathematical thinking is more than finding the correct answer. It involves noticing patterns, asking questions, making connections, representing ideas, explaining reasoning and reflecting on whether an answer makes sense.Drawing on Professor Chris Matthews’ Goompi Model and Maths as Storytelling approach, this webinar explores how picture books can support students to notice mathematical ideas in stories and illustrations.
The Goompi Model positions mathematics as connected to reality, abstraction, symbols and critical reflection, helping students see mathematics as part of their living world, experiences and ways of making meaning.
Participants will consider how picture books can help students move from informal observations to mathematical representations, connecting language, visuals, symbols and meaning. The session will also consider how this approach can support meaningful connections to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority by valuing story, perspective, culture and connection to place as part of mathematical learning.
This webinar is designed for primary school teachers looking for practical ways to connect storytelling and mathematical thinking.
Note: Please bring along a picture book that you could use with primary students, as there will be time during the session to identify the mathematical ideas within the story and illustrations.
