Most swim lessons start with technique. This one starts with play.
In this session, Byron Bay-based educator Simon Jones and Flow State Swim Co. co-founder Anna Jones introduce the Baseline Read™ and Play Index™ — a practical, evidence-informed framework for assessing a child's readiness to learn in the water. Drawing on the Flow State Aquatic Method™, they'll explore why playfulness isn't the warm-up to real teaching — it is the teaching — and what changes when coaches start using it as a diagnostic tool rather than a reward.
Whether you run a swim school or teach lessons yourself, this session will give you a new lens on the children in your program who aren't progressing as you'd expect.
You'll leave with:

• A framework for reading emotional readiness before instruction begins

Flow State Swim Co. is a Byron Bay-based aquatic education company built around one idea: that water confidence is an emotional experience before it's a physical one. Founded by Simon and Anna Jones, Flow State is home to the Flow State Aquatic Method™ — a structured, play-based framework for teaching children to feel genuinely safe and joyful in the water. The method is currently being piloted across primary schools and early education centres in the Northern Rivers, with support from a research partnership in development.
ABOUT: SIMON JONES
Simon Jones is a surf and swim coach with over 20 years of experience working with children, families, and communities in and around the water. Based in Byron Bay, Simon is the creator of the Flow State Aquatic Method™ — a play-based, nervous-system-informed approach to water confidence that prioritises emotional readiness over stroke technique. His work draws on two decades of observing how children actually learn to feel safe in the water, and what gets in the way. Simon believes the most important thing a swim teacher can do is read the child before they read the water.
ABOUT: ANNA JONES
Anna Jones is Co-founder and Director of Strategy at Flow State Swim Co., where she leads the architecture behind the Flow State Aquatic Method™ — from research partnerships and school programs to the frameworks that enable the methodology to be taught at scale. With a background in finance and strategy, Anna brings rigour to the business of re-thinking how Australia teaches swimming.
