Sunday Sessions Jazz: Chasing the Moon
Sunday Sessions Jazz at The Hastings - Bowral Golf Club on Sunday 12 July features Sydney-based five-piece jazz band Chasing the Moon.
Inspired by the romantic and swinging sounds of Hot Club Jazz, Chasing the Moon creates a delicious feast of heart-thumping swing, incorporating Latin, blues and modern sounds. They have released 2 CDs, ‘Nuages’ and ‘Ooh La La’ which have both received airplay on ABC Jazz, 2MBSFM and Eastside Radio.
The group is led by vocalist and violinist Kathy Bluff along with saxophone/flute player Paul Burjan. The two musicians have a rapport informed by many years of playing music together. Kathy Bluff delivers her distinctive style of soulful vocals and swinging jazz violin with warmth and charm that melds with the elegant fluidity of Burjan’s saxophone and flute.
Well respected Sydney jazz guitarist, John Blenkhorn provides the rhythmic pulse and beautiful solos played with flair and attention to detail. That essential Parisian ambience comes with the piano accordion of the dynamic Garry Steel, and Merv Sequiera on double bass lays down the best of grooves, playing sweetly and in the pocket.
Chasing the Moon has performed at Illawarra, Newcastle, Dubbo, Moruya and Wagga Jazz Festivals and is a regular performer at Sydney’s Foundry616, Leichhardt Bowling Club, Humph Hall, Sydney Jazz Club and Camelot Lounge. The band's music is complex and interesting and yet also accessible with catchy melodies and lively rhythms. There is a range and quality to the ensemble sound of strings and wind as solos pass from one player to another allowing each member a chance to shine. This is a band of high calibre musicians playing with musicality and flare.
“Like walking through a music festival in a European village.” - Simon Marnie, ABC Radio
