James Marples - 'Cruising in Third' Album Launch
Cruising In Third is the first full-length album by cross disciplinary songwriter and composer James Marples.
Funded by the Australian Cultural Fund and recorded at an all-analogue studio in Castlemaine, VIC, the record is influenced by the urban post-punk of Young Marble Giants and the quiet pastoral folk of Vashti Banyan.
The album's fragmented narrative unfolds within the intimate confines of a car as it hurtles from suburban Melbourne to the Victorian countryside.
ABOUT JAMES MARPLES
James Marples is a cross-disciplinary songwriter and composer whose rich baritone voice has drawn comparisons with Howe Gelb and Richard Hawley.
Layered in dense layers of narrative and sensory detail, his songs have been described as 'art song miniatures'
Originally from Melbourne NAARM, he first cut his teeth as a performer in London, becoming the songwriter-in-residence at Kings College, London and wrote his first EP 'Go Quietly', which received extensive BBC radio play.
The record led to a long-term collaboration with the Blind Dog Studios collective, including performances alongside gothic chanteuse Anna Calvi and her percussionist Mally Harpaz, who helped him hone a moody and orchestral sound.
In 2019, he returned to Australia and wrote his next EP 'On Polaroid' - a series of intimate 'song portraits' inspired by the candid photography of Nan Goldin, which was funded by the CIty of Melbourne.
In 2026, he is poised to release his first full-length record 'Cruising In Third.'
